Hactivist Media was founded in San Francisco, CA in 2001 as a way for Creation is Crucifixion to maintain greater control and flexibility with new releases. Early experimental releases included floppy disc experiments and sounds by CiC. The first major release by H|M was the widely applauded Child as Audience/participant Book and CDROM by Creation is Crucifixion, Critical Art Ensemble, and The Carbon Defense League. H|M is continuing to showcase musical diversity and experimental media with releases by performers such as Upsilon Acrux and Torus. The label will continue to release experimental work by CiC.

In 2003, Hactivist Media took a break from releasing small experimental releases. The label is not seeking new artists but plans on new releases for 2004.
