Build the Automatic Trigger
This can take some time, especially if you’ve never soldered a circuit before. Follow the Circuit Schematic carefully. Be sure that any electrolytic capacitors are oriented with the “-“ sign towards ground, and the diode must also be oriented so that the band is on the side that the arrow points to (in the schematic), also the middle leg of your transistor is the same as the one coming out of the top of the transistor diagram. Get a mechanical relay that will operate with a 5 volt trigger and can switch 120 volts (you might be able to get away with one rated for 60 volts) it is switching almost –no- current, so don’t get anything too fancy. When you are done, if you can’t hear anything happening, take your screwdriver and short across the 640k resistor – if you can’t hear anything happening check to make sure that everything is soldered correctly. The components should probably run $10-15 – we had to pay $4 for the relay you see here, but we suspect that you can find a cheaper, suitable one.
